Hong Kong Invoice Guide (HKD PDF, No GST/VAT Default)

· · Reviewed by NestInvoice editorial team

Hong Kong does not use a broad GST/VAT the way Singapore or Australia do. Most freelance and SME invoices are clean commercial PDFs: parties, number, dates, lines, total, and payment details — without forcing a tax percentage. Neighbour generators can inspire layout, but do not paste Singapore GST or mainland China VAT onto a Hong Kong bill unless a specific rule or contract requires it.

What a Hong Kong invoice usually shows

Follow the invoice checklist: supplier and client, unique number, dates, description of work or goods, HKD totals, and payment instructions — usually without a sales-tax line.

If you use a BRN, place it under From. Keep wording commercial and clear; this PDF is for the client, not an official tax portal.

Tax lines and cross-border habits

Do not paste Singapore GST or mainland China VAT onto a Hong Kong commercial invoice unless a specific rule requires it. If a contract asks for a particular tax note, add it deliberately under Taxes or Notes.

For structure-only comparison see Singapore GST and China fapiao context — different systems, different defaults.

Using the free generator

Open /hk or the Hong Kong generator, fill From/To in HKD, leave Taxes empty unless a contract requires a tax note, then download PDF.

General flow: how to create an invoice.

  • Unique invoice number — never reuse
  • Leave tax blank unless required
  • Keep PDF copies with your records

Payment and records

Put bank or FPS details in Terms so the client can pay without emailing for account numbers. Keep each PDF with your bookkeeping files.

For recurring retainers, issue a fresh number each cycle — see recurring invoices.

Frequently asked questions

Should I add GST like Singapore?

Not by default. Only add a tax line if a specific rule or contract requires it. Do not copy SG GST rates onto HK invoices.

What ID should I show?

Many businesses include a Business Registration Number (BRN) under From when they use one. Add the client ID only when needed.

Is this a tax filing tool?

No. You get an editable client PDF. Filings and official returns stay on official channels.

Same as mainland China fapiao?

No. Hong Kong commercial invoices are not mainland 全电发票. Use [/hk](/hk), not only a China fapiao layout — see [China fapiao context](/guides/fapiao-invoice-china).

Quote or invoice?

A quote is a proposal. The invoice is the payment request — keep them separate in your records.
