South Africa VAT Invoice Guide (ZAR + Free PDF)

· · Reviewed by NestInvoice editorial team

VAT-registered vendors in South Africa generally need a tax invoice that SARS and clients can follow: VAT number, unique invoice number, description, VAT amount, and total in ZAR. 15% is a common standard-rate starting point in generators — zero-rated or exempt supplies need different treatment. This tool creates a readable client PDF, not eFiling or SARS portal software. Prefer the hub /za over pasting EU or Nigerian VAT defaults.

Tax invoice fields in practice

Show who is charging VAT, the VAT number, what was supplied, net, VAT amount, and total. Use the invoice checklist for shared commercial fields, then add SA-specific tax identity.

Keep net/VAT/gross easy to read so AP teams can post the bill without guessing.

Standard, zero-rated, and exempt

Do not leave 15% on a supply that is zero-rated or exempt. If you are not VAT-registered, remove the VAT line entirely rather than inventing a rate.

Regional layout only: Nigeria VAT — different rules and currency.

PDF vs SARS channels

A clear PDF helps the client pay. It does not replace SARS eFiling or mandatory e-docs when those apply. When the buyer needs an official structured document, treat this tool as a draft or annex.

Using the ZA generator

Open South Africa VAT or /za. Enter VAT number under From, itemize in ZAR, set Taxes, download PDF.

  • Re-attach the PDF when chasing payment
  • Estimates and quotes are available under the same hub
  • Generator helper only — not SARS software

Frequently asked questions

Is every supply 15% VAT?

No. Some supplies are zero-rated or exempt. Adjust or remove the tax line before sending.

What must appear on a tax invoice?

Typically supplier VAT number, unique number, dates, parties, description, consideration, and VAT. Confirm the SARS checklist for your invoice value and type.

Does this replace eFiling or SARS systems?

No. It produces a clear client PDF draft. Keep official returns and any mandated e-docs on authorized channels.

Same as Nigeria or EU VAT?

No. South Africa has its own SARS rules and ZAR. Use [/za](/za), not only an NG or EU generator.

Quote or invoice?

A quote is a proposal. The tax invoice is the payment document — keep them separate in your records.
